The Breast Archives latest podcast tells the story of Noah Merhar, a trans man who underwent a double mastectomy within a week of being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Merhar, now a practicing optometrist, had been wearing a binder for years, but hadn’t yet come out to his supervisors. The risk for breast cancer among trans men and AFAB nonbinary people is not well understood. All people (regardless of their sex assigned at birth) have breast tissue and could potentially get breast cancer, but the risk is much higher in people who were AFAB (assigned female at birth).
Noah’s story, while bitter sweet, captures the courage and spirit we must all sometimes conjure.
